Some Cleveland Browns teammates weren’t happy with his response was managed by the quarterback.
NFL Network’s Michael Silver reported Thursday that, according to numerous sources, many veteran Browns players approached Mayfield from the locker room after the QB comments about Johnson to register their displeasure and hash out their differences.

« So it is rather striking to get a participant to become involved with a teammate’s business in anything but a supportive role, » Silver said on NFL Network’s Inside Minicamp Camp Live. « We watched it with the Steelers and Le’Veon Bell — that was an anomaly. Baker Mayfield is the clear leader of the (locker room) but I’m told by numerous sources that many veterans came up to him in the locker room after those remarks about Duke Johnson and let’s say voiced their displeasure, saying,’Listen it is one thing to be the chief but this is a man who’s going through something, it’s company and we need to support him’ Baker might not have agreed with thembut he heard them and so that is something to keep an eye on as a very, very talented team gets ready for what might be a significant season. »
After Johnson reiterated he would prefer to be traded, Mayfield basically said good riddance, last week.
« That’s something which we have been dealing with for a little while, » Mayfield said at the time, through The Plain Dealer. « If we have guys that want to be here, they’ll show that, they’ll voice that. He’s going to manage his stuff you are not or you’re either on this train, although how he desires, it is moving. You are able to escape the way or you are able to join us. So it is what it is. »
Mayfield also stated Johnson’s scenario was »self-inflicted. »
« I wouldn’t say I’m not happy about it, » Mayfield added. « It’s only the way he’s handled it. It can be a stir-up from the networking, it can be however it wants, but if someone wants to be here, they’ll be here in that situation. You have guys inside our locker room who are dying to get playing time, that are dying to be here, and I get it done… »
Conversely, Jarvis Landry spoke in support of Johnson.
« I expect he understands and feels that men are here for him, whether he’s here or not, that the relationship goes past the player, the individual also, so I certainly hope he knows that and understands that there are guys that are here for him, » the receiver said.
The Browns don’t practice again until training camp in July, when the locker area will reconvene to hash out of any lingering issues, if they even remain applicable by then.
Silver noted that head trainer Freddie Kitchens is currently playing a bigger role in the installation through June practices.
