Jason Roy Was dropped from England and Ben Stokes will Perform a specialist batsman in the final Ashes Test against Australia at The Oval.
Stokes was confined to 10.5 overs at Old Trafford a week after injuring his right shoulder in Australia’s first innings and are not going to bowl in south London from Thursday as England seem to make a 2-2 series draw.
Sam Curran was hailed as a fourth seam-bowling choice to cover, significance batsman Roy – that has scored just 110 runs from the series at an average of 13.75 – creates way, although Chris Woakes has also been remembered instead of fellow paceman Craig Overton.
England captain Joe Root stated: »It is always difficult to leave guys out but Stokesy picked up a shoulder injury in the previous game.
« He will not have the ability to bowl the overs you’d normally expect him and I think it will be a danger to take him to the match as a fourth seamer.
« He may be able to bowl a couple of overs here and there but his batting isalso, as this series shows a large portion of this facet and he rightly deserves to be from the team as a top-four batter.
« That we have had to change the balance of both sides and Jason is the unlucky one to miss out.
« Jason has had an opportunity to enter and play Test cricket and get a sense for this and it’s not really gone as he would have liked, but I’m sure he’ll go away and work extremely hard and come back again.
« That’s what you expect of guys when they get made out. I’m sure he will have that mindset. He’ll want to prove a point and put himself back.
« He is very aware of where he’s in and what he needs to do for himself in the ideal location to perform in Test cricket. »
Australia – that retained the Ashes having a 185-run success in Manchester – will make a minumum of one alteration at The Oval.
Peter Siddle will hope to break up the pace attack of Mitchell Starc Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood, and was named in a 12-man group.
« The bowlers bowled a lot of overs [at Old Trafford] thus earning Mitchell will relieve a good deal of the workload on these, » said Australia captain Tim Paine at his media conference.
« It was a difficult call on Travis, who has made a fantastic start to his Test career, however we just need a little more bowling depth on what looks like a really good wicket and to be able to look after out large fast bowlers.
« Mitchell also has two Test countless so we have complete faith in him with the bat »
Paine’s negative lead the series 2-1 and will be looking to win the Ashes series outright as 2001, when Steve Waugh captained the Baggy Greens to a 4-1 success.
